If your servers run as virtual machines in a VMware ESX / ESXi environment with VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) enabled, our software solution can perform a complete live backup of these machines over your Wide Area Network (WAN). You do not need to power the virtual machines off, as our software will take it ‘hot’.
Unlike other backup solutions, our software will not send the entire machine to our secure vault after each backup. Digital signatures will be calculated at a block-level and compared to previous backups, allowing our software to calculate which parts of the machine have changed since the last backup and only transmit the changes that have happened. And because of the way VMware stores virtual machine hard drive data, this reduces the amount of data to be transmitted significantly.
And what’s more is this is all done from a single Linux installation of our software solution on your network without using any agents whatsoever.
How is this done without agents?
Our software solution uses the VMware API to perform a snapshot of the live machine and then, using either UNIX-SSH or, in newer version of ESX, the VMware API also, retrieves the snapshot data. When all the data has been retrieved the snapshot is then removed, leaving no traces behind and causing no interruptions to your virtual machine.
