As the only agentless solution available, Asigra’s unique architecture removes the limitations of tape backup, and gives you the benefit of a single point of backup administration for your entire network. As with many traditional backup products, such as tape, for a backup of a server to function requires a plug in to sit on each target server. In multi server, multi site infrastructures this requires a huge amount of work by network managers to both set up and maintain.

As the solution looks for changes in the digital signature of the file, if the file hasn’t changed, it won’t require a backup. By using this technology Asigra also has built in de-duplication which means if a file exists in more than one location on a network, it will only need to backup a single copy of the file. Therefore Backup Technology can provide a solution that not only keeps backup times to an absolute minimum, but their customers are not paying to protect multiple copies of the same file.

In 2008 Backup Technology introduced a new, innovative Disaster Recovery solution to the market – Virtual Disaster Recovery. This was geared around Asigra’s strength in recovering entire servers to the last point of backup through the Bare Metal Restore functionality. This feature is entirely hardware independent and it doesn’t matter if the server is recovered to a physical or virtual server. In the event of a customer losing a server or number of servers, Backup Technology can recover an entire system in as little as fifteen minutes. The Bare Metal Restore will recover the C Drive, System State and Services Database, restoring IP Details, Machine names and Active Directory information.

As for security the software offers, Asigra has recently been certified with the FIPS 140-2 security standard. This is a United States government security standard and relates to the level of data encryption Asigra offers. The encryption algorithm used is AES128 up to AES256. This is similar to the standards used by online banking. During the configuration of the software, each customer inputs an encryption key which is automatically applied during each backup. Data remains encrypted on Backup Technology’s systems, and is only in an unencrypted state when restored on to a client’s network. As an extra level of security, the software registers the hardware it is installed on, making that the only device responsible for backups and restores.
